The tournament played in the round-robin format, was also used as a selection process for players to represent Zimbabwe in the Afro-Basket qualifiers set for Maputo, Mozambique, from February 16-24.

In their first game Harare thumped Mashonaland West 114-38.

Harare claimed another victory against runners-up Bulawayo winning 79-64 and in the process taking the title.

Bulawayo had earlier won 64-56 against Midlands before walloping Mashonaland West 114-40, but were no match to eventual winners Harare.

In another game, Mashonaland West beat Midlands 20-0 while a Bulawayo women’s team beat Milton High School 28-25 in a friendly game.

Basketball Union of Zimbabwe commissioner Tendai Mukuruva told NewsDay Sport that the selected teams will be expected to regroup in Harare tomorrow.

“We used the competition to finalise on the team going to Maputo for the Afro-Basket qualifiers.

We had a provisional list, but our panel of selectors used the games to add and remove other players from the list. The teams are expected to converge in Harare on Wednesday (tomorrow),” he said.

“The women’s team is largely made up of the players who represented Zimbabwe at the All-Africa Games in Mozambique in 2011,” he said.

Makuruva said they selected 34 players, but the squad will be trimmed to 18 before departure while the women’s team will be reduced to 12 players from 16.

Some of the players who were selected include Tawanda Chitsinde, Eric Banda, Agrippah Masvisvi and Mickey Samakomva, all from Cameo in Harare.
