The mother advised her to go under the bridge, where she could jump the fence with other illegal foreign nationals as she did not have proper documentation.

While walking under the bridge, they were allegedly confronted by members of a crime syndicate known as magumaguma. One of the men allegedly raped her before he disappeared into the bush. The girl is in hospital while the suspect is still on the run.

Meanwhile, a memorandum pleading for action to be taken against rape, was handed to the police, justice and social development departments after a rally in Cape Town.

Cosatu, alongside community organisations, held the anti-rape and abuse rally in the “Mother City”. One of the speakers, Frieda Oosthuizen, called on men and women to fight the scourge together. Oosthuizen said decisive action was needed to honour those who have been raped and murdered like the 17-year-old Bredasdorp girl, Anene Booysen.
