SIDUDUZILE Zengeni, daughter of former Zanu PF Hwange West senator Grace Zengeni, has been slapped with a two-year jail term for duping members of a housing co-operative in Victoria Falls of more than $8 000.

Report by Richard Muponde

Zengeni (33) and Vumani Siabolyo (30), both of Chinotimba suburb, were last Friday both convicted of fraud when they appeared before Victoria Falls resident magistrate Sharon Rosemani.

However, the court suspended 12 months of the sentence on condition of good behaviour and another six months were suspended on condition the pair pays restitution to GR Mugabe Housing Cooperative before the end of April this year.

The remainder was also suspended on condition they complete 105 hours of community service at Mosi-a-Tunya Secondary School.

State counsel Namatirai Ngwasha told the court that both Zengeni and Siabolyo were employed as assistants at the co-operative’s offices in the resort town and their duties involved keeping the membership register and collecting monthly subscriptions.

Sometime between October 1 last year and January 23 this year, Zengeni and Siabolyo collected subscriptions worth $8 745 from the co-operative’s members and issued them with receipts from a stolen book and converted the money to their own use.

Michael Mambudzi, who is the founding chairman of the co- operative, eventually discovered the offence and confronted the pair about the issue.

Zengeni and Siabolyo professed ignorance about the matter, prompting Mambudzi to report the matter to the police.

The pair was arrested, but nothing was recovered.
