A MEMBER of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee (NWC) extorted a chicken and a pig from a stocktheft suspect he wanted to arrest.
Report by Silas Nkala
Stanley Stembile Xusa (56), who is a member of the NWC based at Nqakala village, Mbembesi, was convicted of extortion despite pleading guilty when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Charity Maphosa on Friday.
He was sentenced to 12 months in jail. Six months of the sentence were, however, suspended for three years on condition of good behaviour.
Another three months were suspended on condition he performs 105 hours of community service at a local school. The remaining three months were suspended on condition he pays restitution of $40 on or before March 1 this year.
The court heard that sometime in December 2012, Xusa was assigned to arrest Shepherd Hadebe for stocktheft.
On arrival at Hadebe’s home, Xusa demanded two chickens to cover up the case.
Hadebe gave him a chicken and a pig all valued at $40.
