Simbarashe Harrison of no fixed abode was slapped with an effective eight months’ prison term when he appeared last week before magistrate Ngoni Nduna facing five counts of theft.

Harrison was initially sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment before four were wholly suspended on condition he pays the complainant $515 for loss of income before March 31.

The court heard that on several occasions in January this year, Harrison and his accomplice only identified as Sabiti, who is still at large, went to Carswell Farm in Nyabira where they hatched a plan to steal chickens.

The pair broke into fowl runs, strangle the birds before stashing them into sacks.

After noticing the loads were too heavy, the men stole a bicycle belonging to Moses Sikero, a worker at the farm, and transported their loot.

On another night they stole David Kangoro’s wheelbarrow which they used to ferry the birds to neighbouring Berea Farm where they sold them, the court further heard.

However, Harrison’s luck ran out on January 21 when he went to Berea Farm to collect money for the chicken sales.

It was heard that Harrison assaulted one of his customers Boniface Chaneta after he failed to pay.

Chanetsa then reported the matter to the police who interrogated Harrison until he admitted to stealing the chickens.
