The accused, 28-year-old Shadreck Mutonda of Solari Farm in Nyabira, Mashonaland West, was sentenced to an effective three months imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when he appeared before magistrate Singandu Jele at the Banket Circuit Court this week.

Mutonda was initially slapped with a six-month jail term before three were conditionally suspended.

The court heard that on January 23 this year at around 4pm, accused was at his farm where he was fixing his car when his former employee arrived and asked for his terminal benefits.

It was further heard an altercation arose between the two resulting in accused felling the complainant to the ground before arming himself with an empty bottle which he smashed against complainant’s head.

He sustained a deep gash, but managed to escape and sought refuge at the farm offices. A medical report confirming the injury was produced in court as an exhibit. Arthur Bosha prosecuted.
