Ncube, founder of the fastest growing media group, publishers of the Standard, Zimbabwe Independent and NewsDay, was on Friday honoured at the Empretec Zimbabwe Entrepreneur Awards for being one of the most influential entrepreneurs after 1980. AMH group chief executive, Raphael Khumalo accepted a shield on behalf of Ncube.

The awards were honouring successful pre-independence and post-independence business personalities who had broken new ground, defying all odds.

The entrepreneurship lobby group, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, decided to honour pioneering business leaders for their influence in different economic spheres.

Empretec was set up as a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme and the Zimbabwe Investment Centre.
Econet Wireless Global founder Strive Masiyiwa received the Celebrated Entrepreneur award.

He was honoured for his perseverance and the determination he showed in building the country’s largest mobile phone company.

Guest of honour at the event, KM Financial Services chief executive officer, Kennias Mafukidze said Zimbabwe could still achieve a US$100 billion economy by 2040 if business leaders remained focused and restored the dignity of the work ethic, which he said was lost during the 10-year economic decline which ended in 2009.
