AMAKHOSI Cultural Centre’s Plays on Sunday national tour kicks off this Sunday with a Masvingo-based group coming to perform in Bulawayo. Report by Khulani Nkabinde

Cont Mhlanga, Amakhosi director, told NewsDay yesterday that they will play host to a play titled Sabhuku Vharazipi by the Ziya Cultural Theatre Club that is directed by Wellington Chindara.

Chindara said Sabhuku Vharazipi “is a comic play on gender-based violence”.

“In the play, there is traditional leader who takes advantage of his position in the village to abuse women. We tell the story in a comic way and also involve members of the audience during the performance,” he said.

Chindara said the play features a small cast of three as the play is “mostly interactive with the audience”.

He said his group had showcased the play at a number of venues in Masvingo and they would bring it to Bulawayo for the first time courtesy of Amakhosi’s Plays on Sunday, national tour.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Sibanda’s Two Tribes will be staged at the Charles Austin Theatre in Masvingo on Sunday.

It was showcased at Amakhosi two weeks ago.

“The partnership with Masvingo’s Charles Austin Theatre has already been concluded paving way for the Zimbabwe Theatre Association Masvingo provincial executive to select their best plays to be presented in Bulawayo. Plays from Bulawayo will now be presented in Masvingo in an effort to build a more serious theatre industry in the country that can employ and sustain the livelihood of theatre practitioners,” said Mhlanga.

“Theatre companies will now be able to access a national audience with their plays making it possible for them to build a national fans and a wider market base.”

Mhlanga said it was envisaged that the Plays on Sunday national tour would make a significant contribution to the theatre industry in the country.

“It is our hope that this programme will provide content to theatres, motivate the upcoming theatre artistes, provide investment opportunities in the theatre sector and provide quality entertainment for the whole family and educational institutions that teach theatre ,” he said.
