The first round of the Zone V1 category which were supposed to be played in Malawi on January 5-13, were cancelled as only Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa confirmed participation, leaving the local teams to qualify for the second round in Tunisia.

Zimbabwe Volleyball Association secretary Ringisai Mapondera confirmed the development to NewsDay Sport yesterday.

“The Junior championships qualifiers that were supposed to be held in Malawi on January 5-13 were cancelled as only three countries confirmed. So we have progressed to the next round. We will be sending a team to Tunisia for the competition,” Mapondera said.

“The team that is likely to represent the country in the competition in the next stage (inter-zonal competition) is Conway College from Harare in the junior men’s category in Tunisia on February 28 to March 10.

“There are commitments they have to make before we confirm them on the deadline on January 10. If we confirm and they pull out, we will face sanctions, so we want to ensure that they have resources for travelling and their stay there.”

The other competitions in the next round in the girls’ and boys’ categories will be staged in Algeria, Nigeria and Egypt. Mapondera said they were hoping to send more teams for the competition if funds permitted.

“If teams obtain funds, they can go participate in the competitions provided we have their records, as we do not want to send teams to go on holiday,” he said.

‘Main thrust is to develop players’

MAPONDERA said their main thrust was for development hence they will not be too worried about the results in Tunisia, given that Conway did not play in the Zone V1 competition.
