LOCAL participants in the upcoming Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC) set for George, South Africa, early next month, have appealed for sponsorship as they gear up for the annual tournament.

REPORT BY HENRY MHARA SPORTS REPORTER

The OCC, which is South Africa’s only major wheelchair race, will take part on February 16.

Zimbabwe will be represented at the race by nine athletes, namely Dorcas Hwatira, Wilson Nyakoko, Alexander Mkandla, Margaret Bangajena, Caston Mutwira, Magdalene Madzivire, Moleen Majoni, Elford Moyo and Edmund Mukutya.

Organisers of the event expect more than 1 000 participants at this year’s edition.

Speaking to NewsDay Sport yesterday, one of the athletes, Nyakoko, pleaded with the corporate world and the government to help them with resources.

“We are appealing to the government, the corporate world and the public to assist us.

“We are looking for sponsorship, be it monetary, equipment and even moral support. We want things like tyres for our wheelchairs which cost $50 each,” Chikoko said.

So far, Innscor, through their Chicken Inn brand, has pledged to provide food for the athletes which they will eat on their way to South Africa.
