WeUtonga breaks new ground

JAZZ sensation Edith WeUtonga Katiji will become the first southern African artist to perform at the AU Desert festival in Burkina Faso next month.

Katiji will represent southern Africa at the 13th edition of the festival running from February 20 to 22.

Elton Mjanana, Katiji’s manager, said it was an honour that she had been invited.

“She will perform on the 21st together with her band (Utonga),” said Mjanana.

Southern Africa has never been represented at the festival which started in 2001.

Katiji said: “It is a great honour to perform there and to be the first artist from southern African.”

The festival is usually hosted in the ancient city of Timbuktu (Mali) deep in the Sahel desert, but due to the political disturbances in Mali, it has been moved to Burkina Faso.

During the three-day event, people from eight different West African countries will grace the festival.

The former Siyeza Jazz band and Amakhosikazi vocalist toured East Africa in September last year.

The trip to the West African country is a success story for the artist as few Zimbabwean artists have managed to penetrate that part of the African market.

She is one of the few and probably the best female bassist in the country.

Katiji is also an accomplished actress who featured in many Amakhosi theatre productions.
