Family spokesperson Eric Matinenga said Makumbe’s body would first lie in state at his Chadcombe home before proceeding to Buhera for burial.

“His body will lie in state this evening (last night) at his Chadcombe home. Tomorrow (today) it will be taken to Marenga where he will lie in state again before burial on Wednesday,” said Matinenga, who is also the Minister of Constitutional Affairs.

The late Makumbe died after suffering a heart attack at home and collapsed before he was taken to Arcadia Medical Centre.
He had suffered a similar coronary attack last week and was briefly admitted at a local hospital.

Yesterday, politicians, diplomats and human rights activists joined hands in mourning the hugely humorous academic and a fierce critic of President Robert Mugabe.

“I’m going over to the Makumbe home to express my condolences to Mrs Makumbe and the rest of the family.

Dr John, as I knew him, was someone whose ideas and opinions I always respected, even when I did not agree with them. And, I loved his sense of humour and his laugh,” said US ambassador to Zimbabwe Bruce Wharton.

Mavambo/Khusile/Dawn president Simba Makoni described Makumbe as a versatile individual.

“As a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe, Prof Makumbe contributed towards education and training of many young Zimbabweans. As a political commentator, chairperson of Transparency International Zimbabwe and activist in civil society organisations, he contributed immensely towards the growth and deepening of democracy, eradication of corruption and defence of human rights,” said Makoni.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights weighed in: “Professor Makumbe was a highly respected member of Zimbabwe’s academic community and the broader civil society and his counsel and guidance contributed immensely to the democratisation cause.”

Makumbe is survived by his wife Virginia and three children, Rumbidzai, Simba and Tawanda.

  1. So the master of predictable academic political humour and sacarsim will be laid to rest. RIP murungu. wekwa Nyazvidzi. As for the American envoy, cde Wharton, its refreshing to see the human in you, ignoring your ever “Melian league” tongue in-cheek-style of diplomacy manifest as such. After all, you are an employee of the Foreign Affairs department. As a people we Zimbos, should be able to respect the line between being human and being political creatures. They are not the same thing.

    • You are the jonathan moyo look alike, bastard.Respect the late honourable Prof Makumbe, don’t write zvinhu zvisina basa okay.

      you are a shame.

    • what about those that are anexing and partitioning our precious minerals for themselves and the chinees.while the generality of their countrymen are macrooned in poverty.furthermore, most of those who dare call other people pupets of the west, are either merried to white people or their children are bassed in America or who is fooling who here.THE DAYS OF RECON IS NIGH.

  2. musvamhiri, instead of mourning the dead,u write stupid things, thats being unafrican. your thinking is shallow……

  3. True leaders are like eagles, they don’t fock. You find them one at a time. You were a true leader Doc.May your soul rest in eternal peace.

  4. Check this: ” I am going over to makumbe home to express my (condolences) to mrs makumbe and the rest of the family. Dr John, as i knew him, was someone whose (ideas) and (opinions) i always (respect), even when i did not (agree) with them .and, i loved his sence of (homour )and his( laugh)” . (Master and Servant’s issue)

  5. Doc rest in peace. Those who wish they will ever be ambassadors at their funerals are crying with GODO. HThe Dr will be remembered for his good deeds and remember, there is no invitation to the funeral.

  6. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and appearance. I must say you have done a fantastic job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very quick for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!

  7. Equation fr u masvamhire and cde chihondo.
    (1) Rejecting majority vote + Handiende + Torture + Killing defenceless pple. = Ian Smith + Rhodesian Front.
    (2) Rejecting majority vote + Handiende + Torture + Killing defenceless pple. = Robert Mugabe + Zanu PF
    (3) Therefore: Robert Mugabe + Zanu PF = Ian Smith + Rhodesian Front.

    • Pythagoras, wabambo, unless yu are a rabid MLF or nostalgic Rhodie incarnate, your mathematical acumen is far too low to express anything empiricaly using abstract simbolism, that level of reasoning is way above your cognitive potence saka usanyora zvausingazivi.
Kufarisa kwese uku, kudzidza pythagoras, kugara zvakanaka kuma dale dale, kudriver mota dzakanaka, kutengawo toilet paper kana kuonekwa wakabata empty re laager, kufambawo muna first street, iyo political freedom to choose yakudhakai kudai iyi in yo own free homeland, zvakaunzwa ne ZANU PF. Thats indisputable. Unless yu are not a Zimbo, Rhodesia was a rabid racist combination that oppressed us worse than apartheid. If yu were not yet born, yu are excused. If yu are a nostalgic Rhodie, like Smith yu will die with yo ideology. As Zimbos, lets keep the liberation war sacrosanct, ngatishoore zvimwe zvese as part of democratic political contestation, asi ngatizive pokugumira. Yes, its easy for Tsvangirai and company to talk of “freeing” Zimbabweans, yet when others his age took up arms, he chose the safety of a whiteman’s tea-room!

      • the liberation struggle wase,nt about selfishpeople like u. it consisted of all people, our parents were totured or even killed for it.they participated in everything for the stuggle.i don,t want to mention some of the gruesome murders commited by our own comrades.many were forcemarched to the basses, where they would be severely bitten, all in the name of stemping out sellouts or whitchcrafts .MATAKADYAKARE HAANYARADZI MWANA.NO DOUBT MORGEN IS MEN OF THE MOMENNT.what is it ,zanupf wants to do now, which it failed to do over thirty years ago.

      • @john we mabvuku zvose zvewataura ichokwadi ko kuponda nukuuraya wanhu wewaka sunungura chii. upfumi watorwa ne china wose kubatwa unhapwa nemaround face munyika yedu zvinoreweyi

  8. A reservoir of political minu.Rest in eternal peace Prof. We shall keep on recalling your bravery and experience.

  9. @John wekuMabvuku blah! blah! blah! blah! unofunga kuti just b’coz Mugabe akahwinha election ya1980 dzimba dzekumadhero dzakangotanga kupindwa like walking into a public toilet? Black folks worked hard to buy those houses and were living there b4 1980. Like a real Z PF functionary your arguments generate more heat than light. All you have to peddle is armed struggle and a 90 yr old in ill health. Who didn’t fight the war? What about those vaibikira macomrade vachibvisa mari? Some were even killed ie defenceless pple for simply not supporting macomrade. I’ll stand by my equation until someone proves the arguments on either side are incorrect.

  10. hey wena john we kunabvuku. unonyepa kuti uri wekumabvuku. mabvuku ine vanhu vakakwana. hechi chikonzero tsvangirai akasiya hondo. aiziwa kuti mutungamiriri endi akagara nemhondi dze zanu pf aigozopondwa sezvakaitwa tongo namukoma nhongo. agara ari munhu ane 4sight.

  11. Hauna hunhu, magaro anenge enhata.Death nepolitics zvabatana papi.u ar too politicised u no longer have human feelings.futseki mhani.
