MASVINGO — Hundreds of trained teachers here are stranded, almost three weeks into the new school term, as schools in Masvingo have run out of vacancies, a senior government official has confirmed.

Masvingo provincial education director Clara Dube said many of the teachers had nowhere to go as some of the schools were actually overstaffed.

“There are no places at the moment,” Dube said yesterday.

She said most affected teachers were those that taught arts, physical education and sociology.

Mathematics teachers were, however, not affected and were on high demand at many schools.

“There is a contradiction where Maths teachers may have vacancies here and there, but not so with arts, sociology teachers or physical education trainers because most schools do not offer such subjects,” she said.

Several teachers have thronged the provincial education offices at Wigley House since schools opened and up to now, many remained without jobs.

A teacher just coming from college said she had been going to the education offices for over a week hoping to strike some luck.

“I have been coming here almost daily and they said we have to check maybe some heads (headmasters) may announce some vacancies,” she said.
