Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident yesterday.

He said the child was swept away by the water after she slipped and fell into the Mazayi stream while playing with a friend at a bridge in the suburb.

“The deceased is an 11-year-old girl who accidentally slipped and fell into the stream while she was playing with a friend close to the bridge,” Moyo said.

He said the incident happened when the girl was on her way from school. Moyo did not reveal the identity of the girl as her next of kin were yet to be informed.

However, sources said the girl was doing Grade 5 at Hugh Beadle Primary School in the suburb.

It could not be established at what time and where the body was retrieved.
