A BID by five leaders of the Zimbabwe Law Officers’ Association (Ziloa) to resume their prosecuting duties after a year-long suspension on charges of leading illegal demonstrations hit a snag last week after the Public Service Commission (PSC) further extended their suspension to April. The five are Dereck Charamba, Leopold Mudisi, Patrobs Dube, Mehluli Tshuma and Musekiwa Mbanje.

A letter to the law officers signed by PSC secretary Pretty Sunguro reads in part: “Please be advised that the Commission on 17 January 2013 extended the suspension orders of Messrs Mudisi, Charamba, Tshuma, Dube and Mbanje by another three months, thus from 19 January 2013 to 18 April 2013.”

Disciplinary hearings for the five were held in Gweru in October last year and recommendations were supposed to have been availed by November last year.

Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs ministry secretary Virginia Mabhiza chaired the hearings with Deputy Attorney-General Florence Ziyambi, acting director of public prosecution Tawanda Zvekare, director of human resources Maxwell Ranga and chief law officer Michael Mugabe as witnesses.

Initially, the Attorney-General Johannes Tomana charged the five with defiance, misconduct and inciting other employees to stage an illegal work boycott before he withdrew their prosecuting certificates.
