The incident, which occurred at a traditional healer’s rented house, has ignited wild speculation with other people suggesting the blast could have been caused by a bomb explosion, while others pointed to either lightning or juju.

Among those who died in the explosion was the traditional healer Speakmore Mandere, local transport operator Clever Kamudzeya, a seven-month-old baby and two unidentified men.

Chitungwiza Central Hospital spokesperson Audrey Tasaranarwo said the surviving victims were treated and discharged since they had only sustained chapped skins.

“The other people we attended to were not burnt, but they had soft tissue injuries, meaning that they had been chapped by some objects during the incident, including the traditional healer’s wife,” said Tasaranarwo.

“As for those who were burnt we still do not know what really caused their burns because their bodies are still being examined and the police are the ones to divulge the outcome when they are through with their investigations.”

Meanwhile, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said police were yet to unravel the mystery with forensic experts and pathologists working round the clock to establish the cause of the blast.

“The police are still carrying out investigations to ascertain  what took place and when they are through with their investigations you will be told,” she said.
