PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangiriai has said the government will soon introduce free treatment for cancer, which has become a major killer in the country.

He said two centres for cancer treatment would be set up in Harare and Bulawayo in due course.
Tsvangirai was speaking in Harare yesterday at the funeral service of former University of Zimbabwe vice-chancellor and senior MDC-T official Professor Gordon Lloyd Chavunduka who died last Friday in Harare at the age of 82.
Tsvangirai said Chavunduka, who was the chairperson of the MDC-T guardian council – a platform for elders in the party to give wisdom and direction to the leadership – died from cancer. “Cabinet has resolved to establish free cancer treatment centres,” Tsvangirai said.
“Government will first establish centres in Harare and Bulawayo for free treatment.”
Tsvangirai said cancer was becoming a deadly disease because most people discovered it when it had already reached dangerous levels, making it difficult to control.
The MDC-T leader said his party benefited immensely from Chavunduka, not only from his experience, but wisdom.

“Politically, he was a well experienced person with great wisdom,” Tsvangirai said.
Chavunduka will be buried tomorrow at his rural home in Dowa village near Rusape after a church service today at the Anglian Cathedral in Harare, scheduled to be attended by Tsvangirai and senior MDC-T officials.
