EU avails $ 75 000 for armyworm fight


THE European Union (EU) has released $75 000 towards curbing the spread of the armyworm which has destroyed cereal crops in most parts of the country.

In a statement yesterday, the EU said the funds would be channelled through the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations to enable government to purchase chemicals and fuel for use in containing the outbreak.

Ngoni Masoka, secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, said: “This support will go a long way in complementing government efforts in supporting agriculture as part of the broader strategy to improve productivity.”

The voracious caterpillar has been detected in some parts of Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Midlands and Matabeleland North and South provinces.
