CHINHOYI – Police in Mashonaland West have launched a hunt for six robbers, who ambushed an armed security guard manning a Dairibord depot where they stole various goods valued at over $1 900.

REPORT BY OWN CORRESPONDENT

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the robbery which occurred at the Dairibord premises situated in the light industrial area on Thursday.

Police said on January 4 at around 4am in the light industrial area, six unidentified men approached Selemani Chikandira (43), a security guard armed with a loaded .303 rifle on duty at the premises. It is believed the guard was snoozing when the assailants pounced, blindfolded him and tied both his hands and legs with barbed wire.

One of the robbers watched over the guard, while five others broke into the storeroom and looted seven cases of Lacto, 24 cases of yoghurt, 10 cartons of 2-litre Quench drink, 19 cartons of Extra-Value, six packs of Quick Brew, five rolls of barbed wire, 1x50kg maize seed bag, 2x50kg shelled maize meal bags and 20 cases of Cascade.

“They also tried to break the safe, but failed and fled the scene.

“Preliminary investigations suggest they had a getaway car parked in the vicinity in which they loaded their contraband before vanishing,” Mabgweazara said.

The guard, who was not disarmed, later managed to untie himself and informed his superiors who alerted Dairibord depot manager Stephen Musengezi, who made a police report.

CID Chinhoyi attended the scene and nothing was recovered.

Mabgweazara appealed to the public to report to the nearest police station if they encounter any suspicious people selling the stolen goods.
