GWERU — A 24-year-old police officer based in Gweru has appeared in court on assault charges after allegedly stabbing a colleague three times following a misunderstanding over beer.

Report by Stephen Chadenga Own Correspondent Gweru magistrate Rutendo Muchena yesterday heard that Fortune Sibanda, based at ZRP Mkoba, was drinking beer at Toyo business centre on November 27 last year.

The complainant, Alexander Bizwell (28), arrived and allegedly started accusing Sibanda of spreading rumours that he does not buy beer and survives on “poaching”.

He allegedly accused Sibanda of lying that he owed him $5. An argument arose between the two and Sibanda allegedly slapped the complainant once in the face. He also punched him with a clenched fist in the head. When the complainant attempted to flee, the accused allegedly stabbed him with an unknown sharp object in the left palm, arm and lower back.

Bizwell fell to the ground and the public had to call for an ambulance before a report was made to the police.

Sibanda, who is in custody, appears in court tomorrow for trial.

Yeukai Mugumba prosecuted.
