GWERU – A Dzivaresekwa man employed as a clerk at the Registrar-General’s Office has been jailed for an effective eight months in prison after asking for bribe money from a Gweru woman to speed up her passport application. REPORT BY STEPHEN CHADENGA OWN CORRESPONDENT

Gweru magistrate Pathekile Msipa heard that Livingstone Maphosa asked for money from Tracy Chawasarira of Mkoba 6, Gweru, after advising her that the dates of birth on her identity particulars were different.

Msipa sentenced him to 12 months in prison for criminal abuse of office, but later suspended four months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

It was the State case that sometime last year Chawasarira applied for a passport and submitted her application forms at the Gweru offices.

On October 19 last year, Maphosa called Chawasarira advising her that the date of birth reflected on her birth certificate was different from that on her national identification card.

He demanded a bribe from Chawasarira to enable him to process the application regardless of the discrepancy.

Chawasarira deposited $11 into Maposa’s Ecocash account on October 20 2012 and immediately reported the matter to police, leading to his arrest.

Yeukai Mugumba prosecuted.
