An official from NetOne yesterday said:

“The voting starts on February 1 (Friday). More details will be provided.”

The traditional season opener has previously been contested by the top two teams, but this year the organisers of the competition have changed the rules of the tournament with fans now choosing the four teams through a voting system.

Fans throughout the country will vote for the teams they want to take part in the competition through the SMS platform set to be availed by the tournament sponsors, NetOne.

In the previous tournament, only two teams have been taking part — the league champions and winner of the premier cup competition.

Last year, Dynamos beat Motor Action to the trophy. However, Dynamos, who are likely to be voted by the fans alongside Highlanders and Caps United, have threatened to boycott this year’s edition of the tournament unless they received their $50 000 prize which had been earmarked for the winners.

The defending champions had last year threatened to withdraw from the competition after their principal sponsor, BancABC, demanded that they be given the front space on the club’s jerseys to display their logo.

They, however, agreed to play, but were not given their prize money for objecting to wear jerseys with the NetOne logo.

Two weeks ago, DeMbare officials snubbed the ceremony to present proceeds generated from last year’s edition.
