The Green Machine, under the tutelage of Mkhuphali Masuku, have been quietly going about their business on the transfer market with reports that they are targeting no less than 15 new players to bolster their squad.

Several players who were part of last year’s squad that finished a lowly 10th on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log are also set to be offloaded if they are deemed surplus to requirements by the coaches.

In an interview with NewsDay Sport yesterday, Caps chief executive officer Max Mironga said: “We have been active on the transfer market during the ongoing pre-season and it’s still an ongoing process at the moment. We are set to meet with the technical team tomorrow (today) to give them an update on the negotiations with targets they had recommended.

“We should be unveiling some of the new players at our weekly press conference before we start our pre-season training on the 16th of January.”

It is at today’s meeting that the futures of players like Shingi Kawondera, Clive Kawinga, Marvel Samaneka and David Rediyoni will be clarified.

Mironga said they had already brought in two players from Eastern Region Division One side Hippo Valley in Dominic Chungwa and Charles Muhori.

The 25-year-old Chungwa, who captained Hippo Valley last season, scored 17 goals which earned him the golden boot award.

“We have already signed two players from Hippo Valley, Dominic Chungwa and a young player named Charles Muhori. We are looking at bringing in about six new players before the start of the new campaign and we also have players like Norest Mkwezvaramba that we had loaned out who will be returning to the team.

“We haven’t released any players as yet, but it will all depend on the coaches’ recommendations as soon as pre-season training starts. There is a possibility that some players could be promoted from the juniors to the senior team, but that will depend on the coaches,” Mironga said.

Caps have also cast their net wider, as far as across the border in Zambia where they have been linked to striker Jeff Akapelwa, who currently plays for Red Arrows and goalkeeper Kalililo Kakonje. Kakonje is currently with the Zambian Africa Cup of Nations squad.

“As far as the Zambians are concerned, we are negotiating, but it’s almost a done deal and we are confident of securing their services.”

Unlike last year when the Caps United squad camped in Chiredzi, Mironga said this year they had decided to camp in the capital.

Meanwhile, Caps United will hold open trials for Under-21 players from Monday to Friday next week in the capital.

Mironga said the trials would take place at the National Sports Stadium’s B arena and would be open to all players aged 21 years and below.
