SECONDARY schools in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province take to the tracks this week as they hold inter-house competitions to prepare for the provincial cross-country track and field championships scheduled for February 28 and March 1.

SECONDARY schools in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province take to the tracks this week as they hold inter-house competitions to prepare for the provincial cross-country track and field championships scheduled for February 28 and March 1. Report by Vitalis Moyo The inter-house competitions are held to select the teams that will represent schools in the inter-schools competitions where the teams that will represent the district at the provincial competition is chosen.

Ihlathi Secondary School, which falls under Mzilikazi district, will be holding its inter-house competitions tomorrow. Ihlathi will also be hosting the Mzilikazi district cross-country race on February 7 as well as the provincial cross-country race on February 28. Masotsha High School, Inyanda High, Luveve High, Emakhandeni High among other schools in the city are set to be holding their inter-house competitions on Friday. Bulawayo Metropolitan province has been divided into five districts which are Mzilikazi, Imbizo, Reigate, Khami and Bulawayo central district that will compete at the provincial competition.

Schools will have their athletes competing in the boys and girls Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 age groups in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m races. The same age groups will also participate in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays as well as medley relays. The longer distances like the 3 000m race is set aside for the Under-18 and Under-20 girls and boys age groups while the gruelling 5 000m is reserved for the Under-18 and Under-20 boys only.
