Bulawayo has been facing a crippling water crisis since last year with residents having to endure water rationing for days. The theme for the prayer was: Thanksgiving Prayer, New Year and the City, Prayer for Economic Development and Prayer for Rains.

Addressing the meeting, Bulawayo mayor Thaba Moyo said the last prayers bore good results and urged residents to continue praying for the rains and development in the country.

“Although the city has faced a number of economic challenges, Bulawayo should not give up because with God’s presence everything will turn out for the best in the end,” he said.

He said the city should not wait to pray to God only when disaster strikes.

But Moyo said he was disappointed with the low turnout and he hoped next time it would be different.

Last year, the city – facing a crippling water crisis that had forced it to introduce a 96-hour weekly water-shedding regime — conducted a prayer meeting at Large City Hall.

Inflows into city dams have remained low despite heavy rains early this month.
