BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) has been accused of not fully disclosing polluted points to Environment Management Authority (EMA) officials making monitoring difficult.

Speaking during a tour by the EMA board, Bulawayo provincial environmental manager Decent Ndlovu said council usually withholds vital information which EMA later discovers by itself.

“We have been commending council on some environmental compliance,” he said.

“However, we have realised that council is not being sincere with some critical information.

“Our officers have to discover council pollution points (on their own).”

Ndlovu said EMA issued 25 orders which comprise 38 points and 22 had been rectified.

The board was taken along Mazayi River which is heavily polluted.

It was told that farmers in Umguza were complaining that BCC was polluting the river system and this affected their farming activities.

It was also noted that industrial polution had be reduced and the development could be attributed to low industrial production or closure of firms in the city.

The board visited western suburbs and Renkini bus terminus where illegal dumping of waste is rampant.

Residents blame council for not sticking to its rubbish collection timetable which forces them to dump waste.
