JOHANNESBURG — Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund’s 23-man squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) assembled in Johannesburg yesterday to start preparing for the continental showpiece. Report by Kick Off “We expect all players that were named in the Bafana squad to report for camp today (yesterday) by 1700hrs in Johannesburg,” Safa media officer Mahlomola Morake told KickOff.com.

“This camp will be the most important part of the team’s preparations for Afcon. We will assemble in Johannesburg because it is a central location for most players,” added Morake.

After having named his squad, Igesund will hold a training camp in Cape Town to finalise his combinations and introduce all the players to his technical philosophy. Bafana have two international friendlies lined-up before they attempt to win the Afcon on home soil a second time.

Igesund’s charges face Norway at the Cape Town Stadium next Tuesday before playing against Algeria at Orlando Stadium on January 12.

As a precautionary measure, Igesund will not be fielding Dutch-based midfielder Thulani Serero and Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker in the Norway game.

The two have just recovered from injuries and Igesund is eager to protect them ahead of the team’s Afcon Group A opening match against Cape Verde at Soccer City on January 19.
