Bester was reportedly shot after he tried to rescue his wife Alexes, who had been attacked by the two men in their home.

Harare police provincial spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the incident, saying a search for the pair was underway and investigations were in progress.

“I can confirm that we recorded a case where a Harare resident was shot by armed men on Thursday evening,” said Chibanda. It is alleged on the night in question, Bester and his wife were at home when they heard a knock on their door which was not locked at the time.

Alexes reportedly responded and opened the door, only to be confronted by the two intruders, one of them brandishing a pistol.

“One of the men pushed the wife back into the house and she screamed. The husband came running on hearing his wife scream and the man who had a pistol shot at the husband below the rib,” said Chibanda.

The two men escaped into the night and Bester was taken to a local hospital.

Chibanda warned residents to be alert all the time.

“People should lock doors all the time, even when they are just relaxing. They should secure themselves and should avoid opening doors to strangers,” he said.
