Goodman Nyoni (33) was indicted by Bulawayo magistrate Maphios Moyo at the Western Commonage Magistrates’ Court.

Nyoni has been in incarceration since the time he allegedly committed the offence on March 12 last year and his trial starts at the opening of the High Court legal term on Tuesday.

He has not been formally charged with murder. Charges against him are that sometime last year, he and his wife, Miriam Takavingofa Nyoni (34), a mother of two children aged five and six, were on separation.

Nyoni had moved out of the matrimonial home after a misunderstanding with his wife, leaving her there with their two children.

On the fateful day, Nyoni visited the house and found the gate and doors locked as the whole family had gone to church. He waited for them and when they returned, he joined them for supper.

After supper, the maid and the two children retired to bed, leaving Nyoni and his wife in the lounge.

However, at around 11pm, the maid was awakened by screams from Miriam, but went back to sleep after Nyoni convinced her that they were just discussing their problems and there was nothing to worry about.

It is believed that Nyoni had allegedly already killed his wife by that time.

After allegedly committing the offence, Nyoni called his elder brother and told him that there was a problem. The brother then headed to Mpopoma in the company of the police, sensing that there could be danger.

On arrival they were shocked to find Miriam lying lifelessly in a pool of blood. Nyoni was seated on the sofa facing down.

The body had a gash at the back of the head, the upper right arm was cut and multiple injuries were on the face.

A machete, which was allegedly used to kill her, was also recovered at the scene.
