MASVINGO – The 43 council vehicles recently attached by the Messenger of Court over the local authority’s $3,5 million debt are now set to go under the hammer on Wednesday.

The vehicles – which include Masvingo mayor Femius Chakabuda’s official Mercedes Benz, a kombi, Pajero, a Mazda Eagle twincab, several Nissan Hardbody and Mazda pick-up trucks, graders, front-end loaders, tippers, concrete mixers and UD tippers – were seized after the workers won a labour dispute where council was ordered to pay them outstanding salaries estimated at $3,5 million.

Initially, the Messenger of Court attached fire tenders, refuse collection trucks and ambulances before the vehicles were later released on humanitarian grounds to avoid compromising on service delivery.

In a notice publushed in a local weekly yesterday, the Deputy Sheriff said the vehicles would be auctioned at 10am next Wednesday.

However, Chakabuda said he was unmoved by the development, saying the council would wait for determination of the case at the High Court.

“They can sell if they so wish. We are not in panic mode. They are trying to exert pressure on us so that we can negotiate, but we will not. Our case is still in the courts even though our urgent chamber application was thrown out,” Chakabuda said.
