CAPS UNITED have renewed the contract for veteran forward Shingi Kawondera as the Green Machine prepare for the 2013 soccer season.

Kawondera joined Caps in July last year as a free agent and belied his rather advanced age with some good performances in the green and white kit.

However, he could not help the 2005 champions finish the campaign at least in the top four.

United — whose experiment with expatriate coach Sean Connor backfired terribly following a string of poor results which culminated in the Northern Irishman being kicked out — finished a disappointing 10th position on the league table.

However, club president Twine Phiri is hoping for a better season and said they had retained all their players who did duty last season, including the vastly experienced Kawondera.

He said they still needed Kawondera’s experience and had plans for him in future programmes.

“We have retained all our players we had last season and that includes Kawondera. We still need his services and there is no way we can let him go. He is an experienced player and we also have plans for him in our future programmes,” Phiri said.

Caps United are set to play Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in an international friendly match scheduled for Gwanzura Stadium tomorrow as they fine tune ahead of the start of the 2013 soccer season.

The Brazilians, as Sundowns are affectionately known, are home to three Zimbabwean players Esrom Nyandoro, Method Mwanjali and Nyasha Mushekwi.

Mushekwi and Mwanjali are former Caps United players and it will be interesting to watch them perform against their former team.

Sundowns — who played Highlanders at Barbourfields in Bulawayo yesterday — are in Zimbabwe for a series of friendly matches which will see them play against Dynamos on Sunday as well.

The Brazilians, on a break owing to the ongoing African Cup of Nations in South Africa, will resume their league campaign with a tough fixture against rivals Kaizer Chiefs on February 12.

Technical director Trott Moloto and coach Pitso Mosimane have therefore arranged friendly matches against Zimbabwean teams to enable their team to stay in shape ahead of the resumption of the Absa League programme.
