THE Zanu PF National Youth League has demanded that diamond mining companies in Chiadzwa should fund their party instead of pouring millions of dollars into sport.

Report by Nduduzo Tshuma

Presenting the Youth League’s resolutions at the just-ended Zanu PF conference in Gweru on Saturday, secretary for youth affairs Absolom Sikhosana said the youths were not amused by the conduct of the diamond mining companies.

“They (Zanu PF youths) condemned diamond mining companies and said they do not understand why some diamond mining companies  would fund soccer to the tune of millions of dollars, but cannot fund Zanu PF which actually enabled them to get those resources,” he said.

He said the party’s youths were not happy with the bottlenecks that made accessing the youth fund at financial institutions difficult.

“The youth fund should not be something run by institutions that are outside the party,” Sikhosana said. “The party should create a fund to be run by Zanu PF, to benefit Zanu PF youths. That fund would then reach more Zanu PF youths than the one run by government. The youths said they want compulsory national youth service. They said the programme assisted them immensely and they want it continued. Those who underwent national service said they acquired essential understanding politically and otherwise.

“The youths are resolving that other wings of the party, be they men or women, should not unnecessarily interfere with the affairs of the youth league. Allow the youths to run their own affairs.”

Sikhosana said the youths had also attacked corruption and factionalism within the party.

“All these vices that they put here are vices in which themselves are not involved, but are a creation of elders. When you hear about corruption, it’s not the youths, but madhara (elders). When you hear about creation of factionalism, there is no youth who has set up a faction. Youths just join those factions started by the elders. They are saying what are you teaching them and are asking that you improve in your ways.”
