Party sources said the youths accused Mukodza of failing to account for cash donations made by diamond-mining companies in Chiadzwa towards funding various party projects.

According to party insiders, disgruntled provincial executive committee members led by Mukodza’s deputy Felistus Dumba privately met and drafted a petition which they intended to present to the national executive committee led by Absolom Sikhosana.

Sikhosana, who is the party national secretary for youth, confirmed receiving the complaints from the disgruntled party youths yesterday.

“I heard about that through the grapevine and I am still waiting for official correspondence then we will act accordingly,” he said. Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chair Mike Madiro confirmed the attempted coup yesterday, but accused the alleged “coup plotters” of indiscipline.

“These people are losers and this is an outright display of indiscipline. They wanted to remove him from power unconstitutionally, but they failed,” Madiro said.

“How can genuine party members convene a ‘kangaroo court’ which is against the business of the day at the conference to plot the downfall of Mukodza? The party will deal with them.”

In their petition to the Zanu PF national youth executive, the youths questioned Mukodza’s leadership credentials, accusing him of failing to unite members ahead of watershed elections expected early next year.

Zanu PF central committee member and national youth secretary for external affairs Kudzai Chipanga said the petition was signed by 23 provincial youth executive members.

“Yes, I can confirm receiving the motion of vote-of-no confidence and minutes of a meeting held in Gweru last Friday about the status of the Manicaland youth chair. There are several allegations on the petition and we are going to sit as the national executive to decide on Mukodza’s fate,” Chipanga said.
