Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri identified the deceased as Paul Phiri.

According to Chishiri, a resident identified as Daniel Hlabiso discovered Phiri’s body inside the taxi near corner 1st Street and 12 Avenue.

“Hlabiso saw the Toyota Raum white vehicle which operates under Eagle Taxi with its left rear door opened,” he said.

“ He got near and saw a human body inside. He advised another Murambi resident, Munyaradzi Zinomwe (35), who then made a police report.”

When police attended the scene, they allegedly observed that Phiri’s hands and legs were tied with an electric cable, while his bleeding head was covered by a plastic bag with a kitchen knife lying on his side.

Chishiri added that the taxi cab’s windscreen was smashed, the battery was missing and the vehicle’s papers were scattered inside.

“In order to avoid the recurrence of similar crimes, we are going to reinforce the standing position that all taxi drivers hired during the night leave full particulars of their clients with their counterparts or at the nearest police station,” he said.

“We also urge taxi drivers to co-operate with police officers on patrol.”
