HARARE magistrate Anita Tshuma yesterday dismissed the State’s application seeking to revoke MDC-M national chairperson Joubert Mudzumwe’s bail after the prosecution accused him of interfering with State witnesses.

Mudzumwe, also Commercial Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe (CWUZ) general-secretary, was appearing at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on charges of swindling the union of over $40 000.

Mudzumwe was recently not asked to plead to the theft charges, but was remanded out of custody on $100 bail. As part of the bail condition, he was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses.

However, last Friday Mudzumwe was remanded in custody after he was accused of denying auditors access to CWUZ premises. Apparently, CWUZ president Cuthbert Chikwekwete had reported Mudzumwe to the prosecutor, prompting his detention over the weekend. He was released on Monday this week.

But yesterday the magistrate refused to be involved in “CWUZ politics” after it emerged Mudzumwe and Chikwekwete had other outstanding disputes at the Civil Courts. On the theft charge, Mudzumwe (46) is being charged alongside CWUZ deputy general-secretary John Chifamba (56) and messenger Tafirenyika Mushonga (40).

According to State papers, CWUZ financial director Felistus Wazulu, is reportedly on the run following the surfacing of the theft allegations.

It is alleged during the period extending from October last year to November this year, they acted in cahoots to steal money from CWUZ’s CBZ bank account.

Pursuant to their plans, Mudzumwe and Wazulu, signatories to the organisation’s account, allegedly connived and withdrew cash from the bank without Chikwekwete and national executive council authority.

Chifamba is alleged to have mobilised regional officers in Bulawayo, Masvingo and Chinhoyi ordering them to deposit funds into Mushonga’s personal CABS account.
