EDUCATION minister David Coltart yesterday insisted that schools will open for the first term on January 8, not 14 as announced in the Government Gazette published on December 14.

Report by Pamela Mhlanga Own Correspondent

“There have been a variety of rumours that the first school term date has changed, even a local daily newspaper made such a report,” he said.

“These reports are false. There has been no change of date. For the sake of clarity, I confirm that schools will open on Tuesday January 8, 2013 as has earlier on been announced by the Permanent Secretary for Education this year.”

When it was put to him that the change of dates had been published in the Government Gazette, Coltart insisted that the dates gazetted months ago had not changed.

“I haven’t seen that Gazette, but when I heard about it I called my permanent secretary (Constance Chigwamba) who is responsible for the changes and she said nothing had changed,” he said.

“Whether it was a mistake or what, but nothing has changed and schools will open on January 8.”
