The police blitz, code-named Operation Nyamavhuvhu started on November 1 and is expected to run until January 15 next year.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda said the clampdown had reduced the city’s crime rate significantly.
“We have arrested 3 182 people for various offences under the operation which started last month,” said Chibanda, adding that most of the suspects had been arrested in connection with robbery, unlawful entry and rape.
“We have managed to reduce robberies this past month compared to what we had in October.
“We carry out this operation during the festive season because most robberies happen at this time when people have money and travel a lot,” said Chibanda.
Chibanda said police would also be conducting random firearms and weapon searches on pedestrians and motorists throughout the holidays.
