TOURISM and Hospitality minister Walter Mzembi was on Wednesday night crowned the 2012 Zimbabwe Council for Tourism (ZCT) Personality of the Year.

In a statement yesterday, ZCT said the award was in recognition of Mzembi’s efforts in steering Zimbabwe’s co-hosting of next year’s United Nations World Tourism Organisation General Assembly and assumption of the presidency of the Africa Travel Association.

The minister is the reigning African Tourism Minister of the Year.

“Minister Mzembi has been Zimbabwe’s foremost tourism champion both at home and abroad, helping to reposition the destination among the continent’s most desirable,” ZCT said in a statement.

The ZCT awards were given in recognition of service excellence and initiatives that advance or add value to the industry.

The council’s president Glenn Stutchbury was presented with a special award for his long-term service to the sector.

Stutchbury, currently the chief operating officer of Cresta Hotels, has served on the council in various capacities for over a decade.

Victoria Falls-based conservationist Charles Brightman won the Green Globe 21 Trophy for his stewardship of the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit.

Travel global distribution systems specialist Amadeus was recognised for its consistent innovation and responsiveness to the sector’s fast-changing reservations requirements, while ZCT’s best entrepreneur accolade went to safari specialist Becks Ndlovu of African Bush Camps.

Lodge portfolio, The Amalinda Collection, scooped the best marketing award in print and/or electronic format.
