CHIMANIMANI West MP Lynette Karenyi, along with her MDC-T district chairman Freddy Dziwande, yesterday appeared in court facing charges of convening a campaign rally two weeks ago without seeking police clearance as stipulated under the Public Order and Security Act (Posa).

REPORT BY OBEY MANAYITI STAFF REPORTER

Karenyi (37), the MDC-T Women’s Assembly organising secretary, and Dziwande (38), are jointly charged under Section 25 (5) of Posa.

The two pleaded not guilty to the charge before Mutare magistrate Yeukai Chigodora, who remanded them to December 17 on free bail.

Charges against the pair are that on November 24, Karenyi and Dziwande held an unsanctioned political meeting at Zimunda village in Chief Muusha’s area in Chimanimani.

The meeting was allegedly attended by around 50 MDC-T supporters.

Karenyi was arrested on November 24 and detained for about five hours at Nyanyadzi Police Station and then released after a warned-and-cautioned statement was recorded from her.

Last year, Karenyi spent the Christmas holidays in remand prison following her arrest for allegedly undermining the Office of the President during another rally she held in her constituency.

The State accused her of describing President Robert Mugabe as gay.

The matter was later referred to the Supreme Court after her lawyers argued her constitutional rights had been violated. The matter is yet to be heard at the Constitutional Court.

Several other political activists and civil society leaders have over the years been charged for violating Posa.
