AN MDC-T activist Elisha Kanyama (30) from Zengeza 3, Chitungwiza, was yesterday found dead a few metres away from a shopping centre in the area in a case of suspected political violence.
Report by Kupakwashe Makonye
Elisha’s relatives suspect he was murdered for supporting MDC-T. Speaking to NewsDay at the family home yesterday, his brother Brighton said on Sunday Elisha had a few drinks with his brother-in-law and MDC-T MP for Zengeza West Collen Gwiyo.
“He had a few drinks with our brother–in-law Gwiyo before he left for his home here in Zengeza. We suspect that he was called to come back to the pub by his murderer,” Brighton said. “The people who were at the club said they last saw him at around 11pm. After about an hour, he was found dead a few metres from where he was drinking.”
Brighton said Elisha’s body was discovered by another person who was drinking at the pub who alerted his friends.
He said his brother had a swollen shoulder meaning that he might have been beaten with a heavy object.
A few metres from where he lay dead, there was a pool of blood although there were no indications that he bled.
“We are known as MDC-T activists and there have been clashes before with some Zanu PF supporters so we do not really know what led to his death,” Brighton said.
“His body is still at Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary where the post mortem is being done.”
Police spokesperson Charity Charamba said she was not aware of the case and would check with police in Chitungwiza. There are fears cases of political violence will increase ahead of general elections expected next year.
