A CARNIVAL Christmas Day atmosphere ended tragically in Chipinge after a 23-year-old man was killed by his drinking mate in a fight over an empty beer bottle.

REPORT BY OBEY MANAYITI

Collen Simango (23) of Mbuya village in the Musikavanhu area, Daisy Hill, Chipinge, died on Tuesday night shortly after he was slashed in the neck with a broken empty beer bottle.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Enock Chishiri confirmed the incident and urged people to drink responsibly. He said circumstances leading to the tragedy were that on the fateful day at around 8:30pm, Simango was drinking beer with George Mtisi at Daisy Hill shopping centre when they had a quarrel over a glass of beer.

Chishiri said the misunderstanding degenerated into a fist fight.

As the two were fighting, another reveller, Hardlife Mazibiye (24), tried to intervene to stop the fight which was killing the Christmas spirit.

“Collen Simango and Hardlife Mazibiye were both drunk as they wrestled over an empty bottle. Suddenly, Hardlife slashed his drinking mate on the neck using a broken beer bottle.

“Simango sustained a deep cut on the throat. He bled profusely and died moments later,” said Chishiri.

After the murder, Mazibiye tried to run away, but was apprehended by Simango’s brother Rodwell (25), who then reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of Mazibiye.

Police recovered the weapon from the scene and took Simango’s body to Chipinge District Hospital for a post-mortem.
