Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident occurred at around 21:30 hours at the 88km peg along the Roy-Chiredzi Road.

Zhanero said Innocent Mupoperi, a police detective based at Jerera Growth who was also aboard the taxi cab, was shot at after he tried to flee from the scene.

“Four passengers were aboard the Ipsum vehicle and at the 88km peg, two unknown passengers hinted to the driver that they wanted to disembark. As the now deceased slowed down, one of the accused shot him in the back and he died on the spot,” said Zhanero.

“The other suspect then dragged him from the steering wheel and demanded cash and cellphones from the other passengers.” As the suspects searched the passengers, Mupoperi allegedly attempted to flee, but was shot on the left thigh.

Zhanero said the two armed robbers got away with $450 in cash and three cellphones worth $600. “The long arm of the law will very soon catch up with these armed robbers. We are appealing to members of the public to assist with information that may lead to their arrest.”
