Addressing guests at the provincial commemorations of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence at Silwane Youth Centre in Pumula, Bulawayo, yesterday, Musasa project representative, Thabani Chinembiri said Bulawayo had this year recorded a sharp rise in gender-based violence cases as compared to last year.

“In 2011, we recorded 1 581 cases and this year up to November 27, we have recorded 2 242 cases,” she said.

“We do not know whether it is because people are finally breaking the silence or there is an increase in the number of people who are of gender-based violence in the city.”

Guest of honour, Sarah Nyathi, who is also a pastor with Harvest House International Church, urged for tolerance.

“The situation has become more worrisome as more cases of domestic violence have been reported daily and at an alarming rate. We must educate each other and stop domestic violence to be able to leave a legacy of peace to our children.”

The commemorations were held under the theme: “From Peace in the Home to Peace in Our Communities.”

Meanwhile, Plan Zimbabwe and Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo on Tuesday showcased a play, When Angels Weep as part of the festival’s activities to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
