A Gweru City Council cashier, Concillia Madzamba, has been slapped with a 10-year jail term for stealing $33 000 from her employer.

Report by Stephen Chadenga

Madzamba (26) was convicted of theft despite her plea of not guilty when she appeared before magistrate Kudakwashe Canady yesterday.

She was represented by Gweru lawyer Reginald Chidawanyika She will, however, serve an effective four-year jail term after two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour and another four years lifted on condition she pays restitution.

The court heard that between June 12, 2009 and November 19, 2009 Madzamba received various amounts from ratepayers and manually receipted them during power outages.

Instead of entering the records into the computer to facilitate banking, she converted the money to her own use.

The offence was discovered on November 20, 2009 by a senior accountant, Mercy Saungweme, and a report was made to the police, leading to Madzamba’s arrest.

Bonwell Balamanja prosecuted.
