GWERU — A 32-year-old police detective Constable Average Chamunorwa appeared in court yesterday facing charges of assaulting his colleagues who had restrained him from bashing his wife.

The court heard that on November 9, the first complainant, Constable Cynthia Hlomai, was manning a police point in Mtapa suburb with two other colleagues when a passerby reported that Chamunorwa was beating up his wife nearby.
The police officers rushed to the scene and allegedly found Chamunorwa allegedly holding his wife by the collar.
When the three police officers tried to restrain him, he allegedly threw an ice cream cone at Hlomai.
She, however, managed to arrest him and as she took him to Mtapa Police Station, Chamunorwa allegedly slapped her once in the face and called her a prostitute.
At Mtapa Police Station, Constable Tendai Dick was instructed to detain the accused, but he allegedly grabbed him by the throat in the presence of Constable Themba Nkani.
Nkani was later ordered to lock him up inside police cells, but Chamunorwa allegedly became more abusive.
