LOS ANGELS – Soccer and fashion icon David Beckham played his last game for the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, helping his team to defend their Major League Soccer title with a 3-1 victory over Houston Dynamo.

The Galaxy went ahead in a golden three-minute streak midway through the second half. Centre-back Omar Gonzalez scored from a towering header in the 61st minute and Landon Donovan slotted home a penalty three minutes later after a Robbie Keane snap shot was handled in a goalmouth melee. Keane made sure of the points with a second penalty after he was brought down in the box in the 94th minute.
Houston Dynamo had taken the lead through striker Calen Carr who struck from a breakaway goal on the stroke of half-time.
Beckham was brought off to a standing ovation from the home crowd with just seconds left to play.
The Los Angeles team had the advantage of playing at home in the championship game, since their stadium had been selected to host the final at the start of the season.
Beckham (37) signed for Los Angeles in early 2007 in a contract worth some $50m, according to Forbes magazine. He is estimated to have added another $200m over the five-year span through endorsements, and also has an option to buy an expansion team in the fast-growing US league.
Beckham has said he will not play for another US team but has not announced his next career move.
