More than 60 workers at Vita Foam (Pvt) Ltd, which is believed to be owned by Home Affairs co-minister Kembo Mohadi have threatened legal action against their employer for failing to pay them for the past three months.
BY OUR STAFF REPORTER
Mohadi is reported to have acquired the company from Bruce Smith in 2010 before the latter left the country.
Workers — who accused the company’s top management of intimidating them each time they demanded their dues — have since engaged the Zimbabwe Chemical, Plastics and Allied Workers’ Union to represent them in the matter.
The union’s regional organising secretary Rabseck Mutero confirmed the standoff yesterday.
“Workers are owed August, September, October and part of November salaries,” he said.
“Last month, 62 workers sent a petition to management demanding to be paid before October 17 or institute legal action. We are taking the matter to our designated agent for the National Employment Council in the sector. What the company is doing is illegal.”
The company is alleged to have terminated some workers’ contracts including some of those in the workers’ committee following the petition, a move the union suspects to be attempts to victimise them. Mutero said some workers had reportedly signed contracts which expire today (Friday) after the petition was written.
