Tourney to commemorate World Aids Day

GIRLS’ football teams from five schools in the city will on Saturday take part in the Barclays Spaces for Sports Voluntary Counselling and Tennis Tournament at Marisha Ground in Old Magwegwe, in commemoration of World Aids Day.

Grassroot Soccer Zimbabwe (GRSZ) and its partner Barclays Bank will be joining the rest of the world in celebrating World Aids Day on December 1 and five secondary schools Nkulumane, Eveline, Cowdray Park, Masotsha and Pumula will participate in the tournament.

Linderrose Moyo, GRSZ’s programme officer, confirmed the competition.

“Every year with the help of Barclays, Grassroot Soccer Zimbabwe hosts a voluntary counselling and testing tournament. GRSZ has had good relations with Barclays, who are funding our programmes in schools. As part of the package Barclays funds a tournament at the end of the year,” Moyo said.

Some of the health services that will be given to the community include voluntary counselling and testing, male circumcision referrals, family planning, CD4 count, referrals for HIV treatment and psycho-social support.

GRSZ and Barclays will be working with service providers New Start Bambanani and New Start Matabeleland Aids Council and all services will be provided for free.

“We want to encourage the community of Magwegwe to fully embrace the services that have been brought to their doorstep. The main reason for this tournament was that we noted there was a need for these services in some communities because some people cannot afford transport to go into town to get the services while some do not have the time. We saw that once the services are within their reach people can go out there, get the help that they need and at the same time be entertained through soccer,” said Moyo.

Methembe “Mayor” Ndlovu is Zimbabwe’s director of GRSZ.
