Members of the Enqabeni faced financial constraints when they were about to go into the studio and had to resort to menial jobs to raise funds for their album.

Leader of the group, Elmon Dlodlo, said the eight-member outfit resorted to working on farms for as little as R20 per week to raise funds. The group managed to raise funds and recorded the debut album expected on the market next month.

“We started in 2008 and by that time it was so difficult economically. We did not have any instrument,” he said.

“We went around trying to sell our vision, but no one wanted to buy it. We had to work on farms trying to raise the money for recording and buying instruments.”

“We were given R20 per week and we had to quit because it was taking too long to raise the money which we wanted. We tried other means, but got stuck again from October last year, when we failed to finish the album.”

Dlodlo said they received their motivation to carry on with the vision despite various challenges, from Swaziland gospel group Encandweni.

“Our main motivation came from reading the Bible and praying. Listening to Swaziland music group Ncandweni was another source of inspiration. Listening to the group’s messages made us believe that we could also do it.”

He expressed delight that their commitment to spread the gospel had finally yielded results despite severe hardships they had faced.
