This year’s race has been set for December 9.

Bellevue Spar manager Stanford Mazura confirmed the development to NewsDay Sport yesterday.

“We have increased our sponsorship for the Nkulumane Spar 10km fun road from last year’s 52 000 rand to 100 000 rand. We have increased the package because we want the race to become bigger and better. We have the passion for the sport and we want to support our athletes. We are still finalising some logistics but the race is on,” he said.

Luwis Masunda won last year’s race in the men’s category while the women’s section was won by Rutendo Nyahora in the competition that attracted 127 athletes. The race starts from Nkulumane Spar to Bellevue Spar and takes the same route back. Masunda clocked 27 minutes 33. 36 seconds to scoop the first prize of 3 500 rand while Nyahora romped home first in the senior women’s category at a time of 32 minutes 41 seconds and also walked away with  3 500 rand.

The winners of this year’s competition in the senior men and women’s category will each pocket R5 000, R3 000 for the runners-up while the third and fourth placed athletes will get R1 500 and R500.

The  winners of the junior men and women’s section  and athletes in wheelchairs in both the men and women’s sections will walk away with R1 500 for the top spot, R1 000 for the runners up  while the athletes to romp home third will get R750.

The registration fee is $5 for seniors and $3 for juniors.

Bulawayo Athletics Board secretary Dailes Bingadadi was ecstatic over the increment of the sponsorship package.

“We are happy with the prize money which has since been increased. We appreciate the sponsorship and we would like to urge athletes to participate and support Spar as they give back to the community,” she said.
